Zhejiang Taizhou boy Sun Chuyang has just turned 7 years old. While boys of the same age are still playing with toys, he has been learning professional yoga for 3 years. One year ago, he achieved the children’s yoga instructor qualification certificate, which makes him become the smallest yoga instructor in China. However, no one even knows he was still an introverted and grumpy child with autism.
Why did Sun Chuyang start yoga? His mother, Ye Wenyun, said that because of her busy work, she rarely accompanied her child and left it to the teacher to take care of Sun Chuyang at the age of two. One day, the teacher told her that Sun Chuyang was very introverted, very unsocial and always playing alone. His mother decided to bring him to yoga lesson, hoping to have more parent-child time with him. Two years after practicing yoga, Sun slowly stepped out of his “comfort zone” and became more active and cheerful. Practising yoga has helped him begin to re-examine the world. With Sun Chuyang’s talent in yoga gradually revealed, several local yoga studios in Wenling invited Chuyang to become a yoga teacher. This is the beginning of his yoga teaching career.
Autism is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder that occurs when the children are young, including social interaction disorders, language communication problems, and obstinate behaviors. In addition to traditional interventions (e.g., early intensive behavioral interventions, applied behavior analysis , and speech therapy), regular exercise training can also help improve their behaviors, such as improving sleep quality, increasing social skills and cognitive abilities. Therefore, exercise is considered as a supplementary treatment to children with autism, a mile to a smile.
