Chung Bing Yue, a ballet teacher who has taught autistic children in Canada for 16 years, started her career as a volunteer and began to build up relationship with autistic children because of her friend’s invitation of help in autism schools.
As Mrs. Chung said, as a teacher or a parent, it is customary to teach children knowledge or skills. However, when facing with autistic children, rather than focusing on teaching them anything, it is more important to enter their world and understand their needs. Some children with autism may have different levels of behavioral problems during the class, switching to a different perspective in exploring the meaning and needs behind their behaviors enable them to relieve negative emotions and gradually experience the fun of class. In Autismilee, we will also apply the Functional Behavior Analysis (FBA) in Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) to find out the purposes of problematic behaviors before intervention, such as whether seeking negative attention through crying, and then improve their behavioral problems more pertinently.

Children with autism tend to lack effective language expression and appropriate communication skills, and they will more likely to lose control on emotions when inner needs are not satisfied. Teachers and parents should both walk with their children and listen to their inner voice while scientific and effective treatment can even speed up the learning process of autistic children with less effort.
