Pregnant woman found dead with son on Christmas “struggled with bullying over his autism’

While Christmas is supposed to be a happy family day, a tragedy occurred in Nansha District of Guangzhou. A three months pregnant woman was found dead as the result of carbon monoxide poisoning alongside her seven-year-old son with autism on Christmas Day, who was suspected of being overwhelmed by pressure from public opinions.

According to Chinese media, the 7-year-old boy with autism began to study in a mainstream kindergarten in Guangzhou since last September and has performed normally for several months. But around ten days before the incident, the boy suddenly clashed with another female student, who was later pushed down in the physical conflict. After the female student informed her parents, mother of the autistic boy was repeatedly criticized and bullied by other parents in the wechat group of school, being accused of her son with autism getting into fights with their children and pressed by them to withdraw her son from school. To settle down the conflict, the principal of kindergarten suspended him for school for few days, which made the mother feel exhausted and hopeless in homeschooling her son.

The public prejudice and misunderstanding of autism tend to bring both physical and mental trauma to children with autism and their parents that they begin to isolate from others and themselves. Not only will they be out of touch with society and peers, but their physical and mental health as well as family happiness will be affected negatively. autismilee is committed to strengthen public awareness and understanding of autism, aiming at benefiting more people with autism through different treatment services and professional information and thus alleviating the stress of families to take care of children with autism. a mile to a smile!
