Children with autism do not know how to express. Also, they have different levels of barriers in communication and social aspects. In view of this, the School of Education of the Chinese University of Hong Kong has launched a robotic teaching program since 2014 to teach social communication skills for preschool and school-age children with autism through artificial intelligence (AI) robots and to present different scenarios to teach them appropriate expression methods.
At the beginning, computer-generated robot animation films were used to help children with autism recognize gestures. Later, they introduced “social robots” to simulate situations and social conversations. In the future, CUHK also plans to introduce more robots to demonstrate the appropriate behaviors of daily life to children with autism.
In fact, the training mode of robots is similar to behavioral therapy. Behavioral therapists will let autistic children understand emotions, body language and social norms through live in-vivo demonstrations, pictures and videos. Behavioral therapy also focuses on observations that allow children with autism to mimic appropriate social behavior.
Of course, AI robots and behavioral treatments have their own strengths. But they bring out a common point: the social skills and language skills of autistic children are very important, such as children understand social requirements and help them integrate into society. Therefore, parents must face up to the different development of autistic children and provide appropriate training for autistic children. If in doubt, please consult Autismilee.
