Some children with Autism may face the problem of insufficient concentration, and even need the shadow teacher to help them focus. Some might have compliance problems. They may not comply to the school teachers. In taking care of the whole class, the school teachers may not Individually be able to focus on the needs of the children in needed for example individual students with autism. Even some social problems that children with autism are facing in school, such as failing to respond to classmates, communicating with classmates, and building friendships with classmates, also require the shadow teacher to assist.

In view of this, although children with autism may have mastered the classroom and study skills during the individual behavioral treatment, in the early stage, the shadow teacher is required to assist children with autism to integrate into the school life. Below, let us explore the help of the shadow teacher:

First: Enhance their attention at school.

Some children with autism, got difficulties in paying attention to lessons. Shadow teachers can first assist children with autism to focus on the classroom with more frequent questions asking and reward their good attention by giving small stickers. This is a difficult situation for teachers to conduct in lesson. Because school teachers may not be able to focus on one particular student. Thus it is easier to overlook the needs of individual students.

Second: Identifying the situation of autistic school children’s emotional breakdown and design treatment improvement
Children with autism often have emotional problems caused by rigidity and make some disruptions in the classroom: i.e. screaming, tapping or crying. Therefore, the shadow teacher needs to help from the side to teach the children to regulate their emotions. In addition, the shadow teacher will design different behavior intervention courses according to the children’s situation to improve their flexibility and compliance of the children.

Third: facilitate communication and interaction with peers and let them integrate into school life.

Some children with autism are used to play alone in the game time. To enhance their social skills, Shadow Teachers need to encourage them to participate in other students’ play and reinforce them to strengthen communication with others. There are also some children with autism who will join the companion game, but they are often too quiet and do not know how to communicate with their peers sufficiently. The shadow teacher can teach the children with autism to correspond in different games and encourage them to talk more in the game.

Fourth: build friendship with others

In addition, the shadow teacher will act as a bridge to help children with autism to build friendships with other students. The shadow teacher will pay attention to firstly, whether other students have similar interests with the children with autism, so as to help build friendship with students with similar interests.

School children should start receiving treatment in the kindergarten period. In addition to keeping an eye on the children, the most important thing is to naturally integrate them into the classroom. Because this age-old child will not be suspicious of the shadow teacher, this can prevent children with autism from being labeled as “problem” students because of the presence of the shadow teacher, and when the “shadow teacher” is familiar with the classmates, After becoming a part of their “teacher”, the shadow teacher can encourage other students to play and communicate with children with autism. In addition to helping children with autism to improve their social skills, they also help children with autism to adapt to school life.
