The University of Stanford recently published the results of the experiment on effectiveness of Google Glass, indicating that smart glass (Google Glass) with smartphone application can improve the eye contact of most autistic children.
During the six-week experimental “game”, 14 autistic children will wear glasses to communicate with other family members three times a week, each time for 20 minutes, and they will be learn to identify and respond to others’ emotions with the help of smartphone application. According to the results, 12 out of 14 families with autistic children pointed out their children’s progress in eye contact.
There are three modes in this program. The first one is the “free game” mode, that is, the collected facial expressions and reactions are not yet organized that children are allowed to react freely. The second is “catching a smile”, encouraging children to find a person with specific facial expression. The third is “guessing the emotions”, during which children are learnt to distinguish the expression they see. When children have appropriate eye contact, a green light will appear with an emoji as reward.
Most children with autism are in lack of social interest and appropriate social skills, so increased researches on this program not only improves the effectiveness of autism treatment, but also makes treatment more accessible. The research team hopes to use Google Glass more widely in treating people with autism in the future, enhancing more eye contact and non-verbal communication in autistic children.
Apart from technical help, effective ABA treatment can also effectively train eye contact and social skills in children with autism. Parents should also seek professional assistance as soon as possible, a mile to smile!
