Moderate exercises with special training contribute to the improvement in expression and social performance for people with autism. Hong Kong Disneyland in cooperation with SF & OC Sports Legacy Company Limited arranged professional coaches to provide training for 21 adolescents with special learning needs, helping them prepare for the “Monster University 5K” next month.

As coach Mr. Chung said, when training youth with autism, the conversations and instructions should be kept simple and clear with appropriate encouragement and reminding, which can help them gradually open their minds and communicate. Although many youths with autism are quiet at the beginning, the coach can discover their cuteness later. After completing the training instructions, coaches will provide praise and affirmation in time while take the opportunity to remind them of the improvement area. Together with the physical demonstration, they can understand more easily and become more motivated in the later training.

Such collective sports training is like a “laboratory” that allows children and youth with autism go out of the daily treatment and apply those learnt social skills to real -life situations. During the group training, children with autism can also learn to express feelings as well as take others’ feelings into account in a more proper way. Respect the needs of children with autism and help them develop personal strengths from encouragement, a mile to a smile!
