Director Lin Cheng-sheng has experienced life-and-death situations many times since young. And because of encounters of death from close distance, Lin has shown respect and acceptance for different lives, including a group of children with different life states in his eyes. Knowing children with autism and Asperger’s disease through his life partner, the art teacher Mrs. Han, he has taken a documentary about children with autism in 2010 and co-founded Taiwan Curio art school with Mrs. Han and the business community.
They generally refer children with autism to “our children”, not only highlighting the need for common care from whole society, but also tearing off the negative labels of autism in order to call on the society to colored glasses of “communication barriers”. Though many children with autism show talents for painting in school, they are facing the dilemma of making a living and society integration inevitably when they grow up. Therefore, Curio has also set up an online store to transform their drawings to a variety of daily necessities for sales that youth with autism can get closer to the social life and focusing on releasing their own potentials.
With the rapid growth of people with autism, creating a society where “our children” can integrate into the majority will be an important issue in the future. While most people in society consider that the behaviors and logics of people with autism do not conform to the existing social framework, exclusion and prejudice will make it even harder for this minority to break the label and integrate. autismilee is committed to provide more scientific and accurate autism information on different social platforms, raising public awareness and care for autism as well as helping people with autism enjoy an inclusive social atmosphere, a mile to a smile!
