There are some signs that can indicate a child may need additional support. While conditions and impairments that are likely to seriously affect a child’s development are noticed during routine health visits, sight impairments can go undetected. It is therefore useful to home in on the following as you observe a child, bearing in mind the normative development for the age of the child, such as that it is typical for children under three years to find sharing difficult.
Information that might be useful to gain from parents;
- How much physical contact, e,g. cuddles, hand holding, your child needs at home.
- The situations where your child needs more reassurance
- How your child copes with new challenges
- How your child show frustration
- How chatty your child is at home
- How outgoing you think your child is
- What your child enjoys doing at home
- When your child plays.
- Situations that hold your child’s attention and concentration
- Your child’s play with other children outside of the setting, for example with siblings.
Parents can make a checklist themselves and record down the time, duration and in what situation with their children behaviors.
