Parents will of course be nervous about the language development of their children! However, the language development of some children with autism is generally slower. Some children with autism may have inadequate vocabularies, inaccurate pronunciation, and some have insufficient communication with people. Parents can help their children’s language development at home by the following methods. Of course, please bear in mind, ABA behavioral therapy is very helpful for language development in autism. Parents should take the opportunity to train at home and children but they should also seek effective behavioral therapy to improve their language development as soon as possible. Don’t miss out the prime time of treatment!

(1) Oral Imitate

The first step, if the parents find that the child’s pronunciation is not inaccurate enough. The first step is to train with the child to imitate oral movement, such as opening and closing the mouth, making a small fish mouth, tongue out so on. Through the oral motor training, the child’s mouth muscles can be trained to help with the pronunciation.

(2) Practice single word pronunciation

Parents can also try to practice pronunciation with their children when they can accurately imitate the movements of the mouth. The pronunciation should be simple, and the single word will the first step of the training. After that, the pronunciation difficulty should be systematically adjusted, such as L sound, some double tone vowels sounds and so on. Through pronunciation training, helps their language development.

(3) Use flash cars to learn words

There are many vocabulary cards to help increase the children’s words and learn the language. However, in addition to the word card, parents can also use the action card to help their children to say longer sentences, encourage children to describe the scenario in longer sentences, and increase the chances of practice speaking, which is very helpful to the children’s language development.

(4) Creating opportunities to promote communication

Parents may be too aware of their children. They do not need children to speak, so as they can understand the needs of their children and help them out immediately. This disguised the opportunity to use their language. Take the initiation for help as an example. When children face difficulties, some parents may be eager to help their children solve the problem. In fact, parents should first teach their children to seek help with words: for example: Mom! I can’t open the water bottle, can you help me please? Take this opportunity to train your children to use language. In addition to seeking assistance, there are actually many opportunities for parents to pay more attention to training their children’s language. For example: making requests, expressing dissatisfaction, pointing out strange and interesting objects, etc.! Parents should not miss any opportunity to train their children’s language skills!

(5) Learn languages by telling stories

Of course, listening more will help children’s language development, but for children with autism, they may need their own practice to help language development. Therefore, in addition to listening stories from parents, parents can also ask questions or guide their children to tell stories themselves.

Finally, if there is a problem with the language ability of the child, it is better for the parents to bring their children to seek professional advices. However, in order to speed up the progress of languages. More intensive training! A mile to a smile!
