As according to Lovaas (1987)’s study, He compared two groups of participants ( received intensive treatment; more than 40 hours of one-on-one treatment per week versus participants who receives only 10 hours or less of one-on-one treatment).

All participants received the same programs for intervention namely; reduction on self-stimulation and aggressive behaviors, building compliance, teaching imitation, building expressive language, social play with peers, expression of emotions and pre-academic skills etc.

Result suggested, at In-take, there was no significant difference between the intensive treatment group and less intensive treatment group on their educational placement and IQ. However after the 2 or more years of research, there was a significant difference between the intensive treatment group and less intensive treatment group. For the intensive treatment group, 47% of participants who successfully passed through normal grade in an public school and obtained an average or above average score on IQ test. All participants in the intensive treatment group obtained a substantial increases on intellectual functioning after treatment.

However, for the less intensive treatment group, after two years of less intensive treatment; which only received less than 10 hours of treatment per week, their results on educational placement, IQ, language and cognitive functioning remained virtually unchanged between the in-take and follow up.

As a result, Lovaas ( 1987)’s study stated out the important of intensive ABA treatment which requires at least 40 hours of one-on-one treatment per week. The result was significant on children’s educational placement, intellectual and cognitive functioning. However, as suggested by Lovaas ( 1987)’s study, any treatment that is not intensive, there may not be any result or effectiveness as shown on children’s results.

Thus, parents apart from choosing the right therapy, having intensive one-on-one treatment is the only way to significantly improve students’ results as suggested. With intensive ABA, a mile to a smile.
