Though “learning is more than scoring” is just a saying in the educational environment of Hong Kong, it can be realized in the real case of Ben Twist, a boy with autism in England. In one high school in England, 11-year-old Ben Twist, who failed his SATS exam, has been given a letter from his school praising his talents that the exams did not measure so as to remind parents of his outstanding performance at school.

In the letter of encouragement, it mentioned impressive achievements and obvious progress of Ben in this year. Believing that this test only measured a little bit of Ben of his abilities, teacher recognized many other abilities and talents that SATS failed to assess, including group cooperation ability, kindness, self-expression, artistic talent, etc. Ben’s mother was moved to tears after receiving the letter, and she was very grateful to school and teachers for their understanding and encouragement for her son.

The exam may be able to assess part of the academic knowledge, but the character and kindness can not be represented by a score. The growth process of children with autism is not that easy as they may encounter plenty of difficulties in socialization and expressions with more pressure and challenges than normal students. No matter parents or teachers, more support and care either in action or verbal expression can help children with autism increase their self-esteem, develop their potential and grow more healthily, a mile to a smile!
