Nowadays, social support and training for those disadvantaged groups such as people with autism are limited. From July to September , a group of dedicated chefs from nine organizations including Chinese restaurant, chain restaurants and theme parks, organized a cooking training course. This course aims at teaching a group of teenagers with autism and disadvantaged youth to cook, which is expected that they can set up personal goals, become more independent and gain employment opportunities through learning to make simple meals.
One of the instructors of the course said that people with autism are very focused during the course, but to take care of their learning needs, instruction should be simplified and clear such as teaching them to control cooking time with “counting 10” and use salt seasoning rather than soy sauce for controlling the amount of ingredients. Such activities are very meaningful and entertaining during teaching, cultivating autistic people’s interest in cooking and simple life skills.
People with autism are relatively sensitive to numbers and procedures. Clear production steps can help them to master their cooking skills more easily, increasing their confidence in cooking, realizing personal potentials and integrating into society. In addition to social inclusion and support, scientific treatment can effectively help people with autism improve their behavioral problems.
