One of the most concerned issues for parents with children with autism is social skills, which can be considered as a difficult problem to handle.
Some children with autism are reluctant to get along with their peers while some are too excited when they get along with peers.
In addition, some children with autism do not understand what social etiquette is; for example, being polite, turns taking and so on. Plus, teachers may always demand students to perform certain social rules, such as greeting teachers, proper interaction with classmates etc ., Children with autism may find it hard to understand and handle those social demands.

Of course, before everything, it is better for parents to arrange social groups for their children with autism to participate. Moreover, parents should pay attention in selecting social groups, considering their mode of the social group, whether the intervention and direction are appropriate. We may further discuss the topic in choosing social group in later chapter.

In addition to participating in social group, parents can also utilize more time to practice social skills with children with autism at home. A set of social skills training manuals can be downloaded from the government webpage, https://www.hkedcity.net/sen/asd/communication/page_5746c55d9034431f1e020000

This “Social Skills Training handbook” was developed and published by the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Xu Zhantang School under the auspices of the Quality Education Fund. After years of adaptation and enhancement, it has joined the teaching activities and interactive practice elements. The book is divided into ten modules that teach students with autism to learn basic social skills through multimedia materials, interactive exercises, classroom activities, and worksheets for ten social topics. Each unit is divided into six sections: pre-test questions, topic stories, worksheets, activity exercises, parent newsletters, and summative social stories. Each part is also closely linked, hoping to achieve the best teaching performance. The topics of the ten units are as follows:

The ten modules of the Social Skills Training Manual include:

1. Thank you
2. Excuse me
3. Greeting
4. Appropriately expression
5. Buy a gift
6. Disturbing others
7. Personal distance
8. Response when being teased
9. Sharing of questions
10. The right topic of conversation

With a two-pronged approach in social groups and home tutoring, I believe that children with autism can improve their social skills with a great progress . A mile to a Smile!
