The organization, Make Sense Life, provides a career planning pilot program for youths with autism from grass-roots families, including self-care, interest and social, sports and health, and vocational training. With parents’ reduced attempts of over-protection, the one-year program gives students the opportunity to observe, think and make decision, encouraging them to grow from errors. A total of 13 youths with autism aged from 15-24 years old will participate in the programme. In addition to 240-hour training courses, the organization will also assign internship positions according to their abilities and personality characteristics so as to help them develop independent living skills.

After completion of the course, the parents participated in the evaluation of the results and indicated that the participants have improved in social, self-care and sports performance. It was stated by some parents that they have learnt to let go and leave more space for independent thinking and personal growth. When witnessing their children are learning to take care of themselves and take the initiative to do the housework, they felt that life was shining again and hoped that they will be integrate into society with happiness in the future.

With consideration of safety issues and the developmental needs of children or youths with autism, parents and schools are more likely to overprotect their daily life, such as providing all clear guidelines and tidying up the environment for them, which may contribute to the difficulties in adapting to real-life situations. Different from the previous autism programs for youth, this pilot program has added real-life more examples to help them adapt to daily scenes and practice interpersonal communication. Learning for the sake of application and integrating into society.

In addition, parents can also consider social groups for children with autism in order to improve social skills and independent living skills. If you have any enquiries of our social group, please feel free to contact us or visit our website for more information. a mile to a smile!
