In a special-needs primary school in Qatar’s capital, Doha, a 3-year-old girl with autism got a new friend called Keepon, who was engineered by Hideki Kozima in Japan and deployed into Doha’s classrooms to help children with autism engage, interact and learn. After gaining popularity among the internet, Keepon is not only presented in the exhibitions over the world, but also launched a toy version for sale and part of the profits will be donated for autism research.

Keepon is about 25cm tall and it uses the warm color that is suitable for children’s learning. It is snowman-shaped that reduces the distance between products and children and help them respond better to. Keepon has transformed the feeling into design elements and make use of the visual and tactile sense by using elastic and soft materials. He can flexibly twist, quickly restore to original shape after kneading, interacting with children with enough tolerance. He is designed with three modes, including eye interaction, touch and dance. His eyes are equipped with a camera that can provide eye contact in response to different situations; when tapping his body, he can also respond in a variety of postures; he can also have different dance even with same music. With strong imitation ability, he can imitate children’s movement that adds more interactive fun.

Children with autism tend to be resistant to holding eye contact and lack in social interests and communication skills, making them become easily frustrated. Such kind of interactive robot can assist children with autism in interpersonal communication and enhance their social interests in order to promote self-confidence and interaction in a more child-friendly atmosphere. a mile to a smile!
