Annual Halloween festivities are around the corner! Want to have party celebration at home rather than crowd, want to enjoy the festive atmosphere but without bought decoration? How about trying a parent-child cooperative handicraft of making an environmentally friendly pumpkin light! With simple materials and steps, using paper instead of pumpkin can make the storage time longer and the process more environmentally friendly, and it can be completed within half an hour!

Materials: (orange) rectangular colored paper, scissors, double-sided tape, puncher, a long string, markers, candle light

Steps:
1. Fold the rectangular colored paper (28cm x 80cm) into the shape of fan, and put double-sided tape on the short side.
2. Make holes in the two ends of colored paper. The long string can be cut into one long and one short parts with long one being tied loosely while short one being tied tightly through the holes.
3. Peel the double-sided tape and stick two sides of the fan. Put hands in from the side of long string and stretch the paper into pumpkin shape.
4. Finally, you can use colored markers to add a “grimace” or favorite patterns on the pumpkin light. Put a candle light on the bottom rather than a real candle, then you are done!

The production process of pumpkin lights can not only make children with autism have a more diversified life experience, but also makes the parent-child relationship more harmonious through cooperation and communication. Teaching can also be integrated into the production, such as knowing colors, training finger flexibility and so on. Simple and clear steps are more likely to stimulate children’s play interest. Additionally, children with autism can also get self-affirmation and sense of accomplishment from the process of DIY and creation, which is also an extra driving force for them to try a variety ways of play in the future. Parents can give a try to enjoy the DIY fun with children! a mile to a smile!
