The Malaysian film “Guang” is a real life story in which the director records the life with his own brother. The actor in “Guang” who has ASD is particularly sensitive to sound, and this contributes to his outstanding musical talent. The symptoms of ASD depicted in the film are typical, such as over-reactive or non-responsive to certain senses, repetitive behaviors, narrow interests, resistance to accept new things, poor expression and communication, and being self-centered.

Wenguang is a teenager with autism. After his mother passed away, his younger brother remembered the promise with his mother that he would never leave Wenguang alone. Since it is difficult for Wenguang to concentrate in daily life and have normal socialization, finding a stable job becomes a challenge for him. Therefore, his younger brother has to take care of the usual expenses of the whole family. One day he suddenly heard music coming from Wenguang’s room, he opened the door and found a hidden talent slowly revealing, and at that moment he realized that he has never tried to understand his brother.

ASD patients are usually labelled by the society as “disabled”, but in fact, like everyone else, they have their own strengths and talents, so do not judge by their social behaviours and think they are social burdens. Support and encouragement from the public are the key for them to integrate into the society. Therefore, please help children with autism by starting to accept and understand them, a mile to a smile.
