Gold medal symbolizes glory and pursuit, while for pianist who was born with autism, it implied double effort and endeavor. The only gold in the autism group was given to 30-year-old Taiwanese representative, Lee Shang-Hsuan, who retained his champion title this year and then returned to Kaohsing as a street artist. People with autism tend to lack in communication skill, so Lee’s father resigned from his job and accompanied his son to the street for performance more than 7 years ago, hoping that his son could face his future life with own skills.
Lee Shang-Hsuan, diagnosed with hyperactive autism at the age of 3, showed obvious obstacles in thinking logics and expression ability. Noticing Lee’s interest in music, especially classical music, father wished to help improve his hyperactivity through music and explore own interest and potentials. As father stated that, Lee is quite sensitive to number and beats that he is better at playing fast songs and he won two consecutive championships by fast songs. Father has been accompanied him as a street artist for 7 years and expected him to cultivate more independent living ability for future.
We do believe that children with autism can also give play to their strengths as the ordinary children and parental education and encouragement are the driving force for children’s progress. In addition, early assessment and scientific behavioral therapy can better help children improve their behavioral problems and embrace a brighter future. a mile to a smile!
