In the library of Yangming University, each book is located neatly and aligned the edge of bookshelf. All of this is attributed to the industrious work of one librarian with autism, Peng Shengyuan, who was affirmed by the outstanding worker award in Taipei this year.

When he first came to the library, Peng sometimes keep self-muttering, which may disturb the quiet learning environment of library. Therefore, the school adjusted him to work on only the first and second floors, so that he can be more concentrated and help alleviate the workload of returning a large amount of books to the shelves. In fact, he has strong memory that he can remember the positions of each book quickly, shortening the sorting and putaway process effectively. His sensitivity of aligned arrangement also allows each book to be neatly placed, and the affirmation and encouragement from teachers and students can further enhance his confidence and enthusiasm.

As the university librarian said, developmental barriers do not necessarily affect their job performance, and it depends on whether employers can discover their strengths and potentials. Particularly, Yangming University is a medical-oriented university, fostering empathy in interaction with people with physical and mental deficiencies can train better medical professions and thus help more people with autism integrate into society. Raise public awareness and tolerance for autism and encourage their independence and employment opportunities, a mile to a smile!
