A boy from New Zealand, James, was diagnosed with autism at a young age that he got quite sensitive and anxious when going on outings. Despite his difficulty in peer interaction and communication with his family, the fortune is that he has a loyal service dog that accompanied by his side all the time like the closest friend.

Mahe, a 6-year-old service dog trained by a local foundation, received half-year professional training in order to help and protect James with autism. While James tended to feel nervous and stimulated in public area, it made it stressful to be in the crowded places where James might dart away with over-sensitivity. So the main responsibility of James is to keep James safe and calm so as not to be lost or in danger. Mahe stayed by James’ sides no matter where he goes and was able to inform the family timely to ensure the boy’s health when epileptic seizure occurs. Occurrence of Mahe has changed their lives so much and become a real part of the family by providing more fun and companionship.

There is a positive relationship between animals and humans, the same as the special connection between dog and child with autism. As the most loyal listener, dog can help children with autism to relieve nervous emotions and feel more comfortable to interact and communicate. Parents are also suggested to give children more company, care and understanding in order to help children with autism build up confidence and promote parent-child relationship. a mile to a smile!
